Dental x-rays have been used as a diagnostic tool which can detect damage and disease which may not be detectable during a routine dental exam.

The use of x-rays, or dental imaging, allows our dentists to make the most thorough examinations and develop the best treatment plan for you needs.

Types of Dental X-Rays

There are five common types of dental x-rays.

They include:

  • Bite-wing
  • Cone beam
  • Occlusal
  • Panoramic
  • Periapical

Each of these types provides different information for our dental team.

Problems Revealed Using X-Rays

There are many problems a dental x-ray can reveal. It’s why we use them on such a regular basis.

Some of the dental problems an x-ray reveals include:

  • Decay between the teeth
  • Bone loss
  • Cysts or abscesses
  • Internal tooth issues
  • Issues under the gum line
  • Poor position of tooth or root
  • Tumors (cancerous and non-cancerous)

Dental X-Ray Procedure

If you have never had a dental x-ray the procedure is pretty simple.

We peform our x-rays before cleaning to determine the health of all the structures in your mouth.

Depending on the type of x-ray needed, the picture can be taken from inside or outside the mouth. We use special adapters to make this as comfortable as possible.

While taking an x-ray, we provide you with a lead vest which rests over your chest and lap. The purposes is to reduce the amount of x-rays your body receives.

Once the x-ray is taken, it is stored in our computer where the dentists can review them.

  • Our digital x-ray technology allows us to use much less radiation than traditional x-rays but other benefits of digital dental x-rays include:
  • Imaging results are more reliable leading to a greater accuracy in diagnosis.
  • A 10 times greater resolution over traditional x-rays.
  • Easier viewing on a computer monitor that can be shared with the patient to provide more detailed explanations.
